Frequently asked questions
Does coloring locs cause thinning?
Color itself does not cause thinning — improper technique does. Over-processing, repeated lightening, or lack of post-color conditioning can weaken the hair shaft. Professional color services include strengthening treatments to rebalance moisture and protein after chemical alteration.
Can locs be safely colored?
Yes — but only with professional assessment. Locs are compacted hair fibers, which means chemicals behave differently than on loose hair. Improper lightening can compromise the cuticle, weaken the cortex, and lead to dryness or breakage. A licensed cosmetologist evaluates porosity, maturity of the loc, previous color history, and scalp health before applying any chemical service.
Is it safe to color starter locs?
It depends. Starter locs are still forming bonds within the hair shaft, and chemical services during this phase may increase unraveling or dryness. We usually recommend allowing locs to stabilize before coloring, unless we determine your hair is strong enough.
Why does loc color fade differently than loose hair?
Locs absorb and retain pigment differently due to their compact structure. Porosity, product buildup, and water quality all affect color longevity. Professional loc color services include clarifying and preparation steps to ensure even saturation and fade control.
